I’ve been trying to figure out my stance on the ALS Ice Bucket challenge pretty much since it began.
Overnight, my Facebook page became more littered with people dumping water on their heads than it was with Farmville updates. So I started off a little annoyed with this thing.
I then thought: “Well, it’s for a good cause, right? People are doing this to raise money. That’s pretty awesome.”
And awareness. Wow! It was really raising awareness. I was impressed. And then I heard how much money this challenge was actually raising for the cause. That’s really impressive.
Being impressed led to me being a little frustrated though. I’m currently working on a fundraiser for a cause that’s near and dear to my heart, but we were not getting that much attention. I got angry at the fundraiser again. I’m not expecting to raise billions of dollars, but a few thousand would be amazing, right?
I went right back to being annoyed when I woke up this morning to a Facebook notification and a text message telling my that I had been nominated … twice!
All I could think about was how I didn’t plan on washing my hair tonight and I have to drive to our far away office tomorrow and how early I would have to wake up to do all that.
Shallow. That’s really shallow, Nicole.
I watched the video today about the origin of the ice bucket challenge and it changed my thoughts completely and for good.
Everyone has causes that are near and dear to their hearts. Although I have not been affected by ALS, many people have been. If this much awareness was raised for a cause that I care so deeply about, I’d be thrilled to see it raise this much money and awareness. Who am I to say that Pete Frate’s efforts are not important? Who am I to choose not to help?
The decision to participate in this challenge should not have even been a decision. It’s a no-brainer.
So on Day 16 of 100 Days of Happiness, participating in this challenge and donating to this cause made me extremely happy.
So – since I was challenged twice – here’s the pup and I taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. (Sorry, Mir just had cold water. She’s still trying to figure out why I dumped water on her, so I wasn’t going to pelt her with ice cubes too.)
